(Gearbox) Questions:
Main Q&A
  1. I owned 1984 360GLE and has a meter reading of 284000km without any engine overhaul or majorwork done on the gearbox. What could be wrong with my noisy gearbox? It runs quietly on 5th gear.

  2. About the 340 Variomatic: Does any body have any info re the above I have inherited one but am not sure whether it works ok or not? It is very noisy annd seems to stick in gear? But will still reach 90 mph.

Answers:
  1. What sort of noise?

I bought a car once with the wrong gasket between the diff and gearbox and caused incorrect bearing clearances. The symptom was a high pitch whine when slowing down in the 1st or 2nd. Check the oil anyway.

284kM (177K Miles) is not that high a milage and you should not get any wear problems unless the oil is low or it has been especially abused.

Its very unusual to get problems with these boxes, as they are more than strong enough for the 360, inherited from the 240. If there is something wrong internally get a box from the scrap yard, don't try to get it fixed. Up

    • Do you mean one of the CVT automatics? A friend of mine has one and it is also very noisy, and always sounds as if it's in second gear, but seems to work okay otherwise. I think it's just a side effect of having a gearbox made from a big rubber band.Up
    • I just bought one too Had the same problem- sounded like it was stuck in in too low a gear. Turned out that it was a valve not working in the vacum mechanism. It is just at the top of the engine space on Right hand side just by the bulkhead on mine. Take off the tubes at the back and check there is suction when you increase the engine revs. You should be able to hear it click. You may be able to take it apart and fix the grommet with superglue. A complete new component costs £68 (UKpounds) here.Up
